The strange part is not that a modern secondhand VLCC has value. The strange part is that the market is willing to price time so aggressively. A buyer looking at the five-year-old benchmark is paying roughly $13.2 million above the newbuild benchmark. A buyer looking at the resale benchmark is staring at a much larger spread of roughly $44.7 million.

Those two numbers create very different decisions. The five-year-old premium can be justified by several strong months or a few strong years of tanker earnings. The resale premium needs a more forceful case: charter cover, strategic cargo control, a replacement requirement, a special delivery window, or a view that the available ship will keep earning long enough to cover the spread before values cool.

A five-year-old VLCC should be young enough to avoid many older-tonnage problems, but buyers still need to verify class status, SIRE history, machinery records, ballast-water system performance, cargo-equipment condition, coating files, certificates and near-term survey dates.

The premium is weaker if the ship must slow down to stay marketable or if carbon costs cannot be passed through. The buyer should model the deal under a lower freight case, lower resale value, higher financing cost and longer idle time. If the vessel still covers debt service and retains a credible exit, the premium is more defensible.
